The argon plasma used in ICP-OES is contained in the ICP-OES torch and generated by radio-frequency (RF) energy which passes through the RF coil.
The RF coil is water cooled and should be replaced if signs of corrosion are evident or if there is any physical sign of damage to the coil.
Gold-plated coils are more resistant to corrosion and wear, which is particularly beneficial when working with aggressive samples or high acid concentrations.
Copper coils are recommended for use with organic solvents for longer life.
